Role overview
This position is based in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada and focuses on maintaining a clean, safe, and well-organized school environment. The role supports daily housekeeping activity across classrooms, restrooms, shared areas, and storage spaces, with a strong emphasis on hygiene, safety, and teamwork.
Core duties
The successful candidate will carry out routine cleaning and sanitation work, respond quickly to spills and accidents, help keep supplies stocked, and report facility issues that need attention. The job also involves following cleaning procedures, using equipment correctly, and working in line with school expectations.
Daily cleaning tasks
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and polish flooring throughout the facility.
- Remove dust and clean surfaces, furniture, windowsills, and fixtures.
- Empty waste bins, sanitize them, and fit new liners.
Restroom maintenance
- Disinfect toilets, sinks, and other bathroom fixtures.
- Refill consumables such as toilet paper, soap, and paper towels.
- Keep restrooms clean, fresh, and hygienic.
Surface disinfection
- Regularly disinfect high-touch points such as door handles, light switches, and handrails to help limit germ spread.
Specialized cleaning
- Complete scheduled deep-cleaning work, including carpets, windows, and floor stripping and waxing.
- Deal with spills and accidents quickly and safely.
Supplies and equipment
- Operate cleaning tools and machines correctly and report faults or repair needs.
- Track cleaning inventory and replenish supplies when needed.
Health and safety
- Follow safe procedures when handling cleaning chemicals and hazardous materials.
- Use required personal protective equipment and comply with safety rules.
Facility appearance and coordination
- Keep storage areas tidy and well arranged.
- Escalate maintenance concerns such as leaks or broken fixtures without delay.
- Work closely with other staff members and follow assigned task lists or supervisor direction.
Skills and competencies
The role calls for strong attention to detail, good time management, knowledge of cleaning methods, confidence using housekeeping equipment, safety awareness, reliability, punctuality, and effective communication with team members.
Qualifications and experience
No formal schooling is required, although basic reading, writing, and number skills are useful. Prior experience in cleaning or janitorial work is preferred, particularly in schools, childcare settings, or similar environments.
