Job description
About the role
InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto is presented as a landmark luxury hotel in central Melbourne, operating within the wider InterContinental brand known for global hospitality experience and local market understanding. The organisation is seeking a Handyperson to join its Engineering team and help maintain a safe, well-functioning property that reflects luxury standards for guests and colleagues.
Role overview
In this position, you will work mainly behind the scenes to keep the hotel’s rooms, equipment, and common areas in excellent working order. Your contribution will support smooth daily operations and help deliver a premium guest experience through timely maintenance and high presentation standards.
Key duties
The role covers a broad mix of general maintenance work, including surface painting, carpentry, plumbing support, electrical fixes, and basic air-conditioning upkeep. You will also handle maintenance requests from guests and team members, complete routine preventive inspections, diagnose equipment faults, and help move or set up furniture and equipment when needed. Collaboration with Housekeeping, Front Office, and other departments is an important part of ensuring issues are resolved quickly, professionally, and in line with hotel health and safety rules.
What the employer is looking for
The ideal candidate will be service-minded and motivated by creating memorable guest experiences. Previous exposure to maintenance, handyman, engineering, or a similar trade-based role is expected. A practical working knowledge of plumbing, electrical work, HVAC, carpentry, and general building maintenance is important, along with strong troubleshooting ability and the confidence to work on your own. Attention to detail, a commitment to high standards, and the physical capacity to lift, stand, and work across different environments are also required. Experience in a luxury hotel setting is an advantage but not mandatory. Flexibility to work according to operational needs is necessary, and applicants must have the legal right to live and work in Australia.
Benefits and rewards
The company offers paid birthday leave, an enhanced parental leave program, paid wellness and mental health days, discounted accommodation plus food and beverage rates across IHG hotels, access to a broader employee discounts platform for major brands and retailers, ongoing learning and development support, and the ability to carry entitlements forward as you progress within the group.
Additional information
If you do not meet every single criterion but believe you could be a strong match for the position, you are encouraged to express your interest.
