Job description

Role overview

This is a senior in-house legal leadership role for a U.S.-barred General Counsel who will support three major workstreams: a top-tier direct-to-consumer e-commerce brand, a family office investing in hedge funds, and cross-border legal structuring across multiple jurisdictions. The role reports directly to the CEO, oversees external counsel across the relevant areas, and manages high-impact legal matters spanning consumer protection, FTC compliance, fund subscription and custody processes, and international asset structuring.

The position is designed for someone who wants broad ownership rather than a support function. The work requires independent judgment, speed, and the ability to handle multiple legal domains at once.

Growth opportunity

This role is intended to compress years of senior legal experience into a short period by giving you exposure to three very different legal environments at once. In the first 90 days, you are expected to independently surface at least five material legal risks within your assigned areas. You will also prepare monthly legal exposure reviews for the CEO, run quarterly compliance checks across consumer-facing touchpoints, and review fund documentation on a recurring basis while helping negotiate LP terms.

The environment is suited to highly driven professionals who learn quickly and enjoy a fast pace. It is less suitable for those who prefer a slower, more structured cadence.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead legal coverage across DTC e-commerce compliance, hedge fund documentation, and cross-border structuring matters.
  • Review consumer-facing processes, including checkout and other customer touchpoints, for FTC and related regulatory alignment.
  • Manage and coordinate relationships with outside counsel across the assigned legal areas.
  • Support hedge fund subscription documents, custody-related protocols, and fund review processes.
  • Assist with negotiation of LP terms and related investment documentation.
  • Identify legal and compliance risks proactively without waiting for a formal assignment.
  • Prepare monthly risk and exposure updates directly for the CEO.
  • Conduct quarterly compliance sweeps and recurring document reviews as part of the legal operating rhythm.
  • Work across multiple international jurisdictions and help coordinate cross-border legal structuring.

Required qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 5 to 10 years of legal experience, preferably spanning both law firm and in-house environments.
  • Proven ability to handle several outside counsel relationships at the same time.
  • Strong comfort level working independently with limited supervision.
  • Experience working across international jurisdictions and coordinating cross-border legal matters.
  • Demonstrated habit of identifying issues and risks on a proactive basis.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and act on observations without needing detailed direction.
  • AI fluency, with regular use of tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, or similar for research, drafting, and risk analysis; this will be assessed during interviews.

Preferred background

  • Corporate or commercial law experience, ideally from a mid-market or BigLaw setting before moving in-house.
  • Exposure to fund finance, LP agreements, or NAV-based lending.
  • Familiarity with consumer protection law, including FTC rules or state-level requirements, and the DTC e-commerce environment.
  • Experience supporting corporate transactions or due diligence work.
  • Prior work with high-net-worth individuals or family office clients.

Compensation and benefits

The role offers compensation of up to USD 220,000 per year, plus a monthly performance bonus of up to 10%. The total annual package can reach up to USD 246,800.

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, depending on the country of hire.
  • Generous paid time off plus public holidays, based on the country of hire.
  • Access to an AI-native tool stack in an AI-first work environment.
  • Remote-first setup with the flexibility to work from home or another suitable location.
  • Learning and development opportunities.
  • Collaboration with an international team representing more than 14 nationalities.
  • Eligibility for the Leaders Club recognition program, which includes premium wellness memberships, networking with senior leadership, and annual leadership retreats.
  • Eligibility for monthly recognition as a 'We Are' Champion of the Month, including gift vouchers and company-wide celebration.

Culture and operating style

The organization describes itself as fast-moving, ambitious, and highly performance-oriented. Team members are expected to act like owners, work with urgency, pursue excellence, use AI actively in daily work, and commit fully when the mission requires it.

Location and working arrangement

This is a remote role open globally, with a specific requirement for significant overlap with EMEA time zones, particularly the Middle East and Europe.

Additional notes

This position is positioned as a high-autonomy leadership role for someone who wants broad legal ownership, direct CEO exposure, and a highly proactive operating model.

The employer also describes itself as a top 5 mattress brand in the U.S. with more than USD 1 billion in sales, Great Place to Work certified, and led by a CEO who is a member of the Forbes Council.
