Job description
Role summary
This role is centered on safeguarding people and assets from fire-related and other emergency threats. The firefighter is expected to carry out rescue operations, suppress fires, and respond to incidents such as motor vehicle accidents and natural disasters.
Core duties
- Carry out search, rescue, and fire suppression work in response to fires, accidents, floods, bomb-related situations, and hazardous substance spills.
- Operate emergency response vehicles, tools, and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Use hand tools and power tools to ventilate buildings, place and climb ladders, pull hoses from the apparatus, connect hoses to hydrants and pumps, and direct water streams of different sizes during firefighting.
- Run pumps, foam-producing units, boom nozzles, ground sweep nozzles, and related equipment.
- Complete salvage and overhaul tasks to reduce property loss after an incident.
- Take part in station drills and emergency response training sessions.
- Respond to hazardous materials emergencies in line with applicable requirements.
- Handle additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge and skills
The position calls for the ability to make quick, practical decisions in high-pressure situations, work in dangerous environments, and sustain significant physical effort. Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills are needed, along with the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues. Depending on the contract or assignment, further skills or knowledge may also be necessary.
Experience and education
A minimum of 1 year of firefighting experience is required. A high school diploma or an equivalent qualification is required, while an associate’s degree is preferred. Candidates should hold relevant certifications such as IFSAC, DoD, or National Pro-Board credentials for Fire Fighter II, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF). ARFF is not required for fire departments without an aircraft firefighting mission. Applicants must also possess and keep current a state certification, and it is preferred that they have DoD, ProBoard, or IFSAC Driver Operator certifications for Pumper, ARFF, and MWS. A Telecommunicator I and II certificate is also required. A valid driver’s license is mandatory. Additional experience or education may be requested depending on the contract or assignment.
Working conditions
The role requires the ability to perform all duties associated with interior structural firefighting in line with OSHA 1910.156. Work may be carried out in remote and uncomfortable living conditions. The position may involve long hours, exposure to weather, hazardous environments, and readiness to move on short notice under difficult circumstances.
