Job description

About Watercare

Watercare is entering a major period of investment and long-term planning, with $14 billion earmarked over the next 10 years to support Auckland’s growth in a climate-resilient way. That works out to an average spend of $3.8 million each day.

The organisation is committed to caring for water, land, and people, and to strengthening environmental outcomes for future generations.

About the role

An opportunity is available for a Data Analyst or Environmental Scientist to join the Environmental Care team. The position focuses on protecting the environment while improving the performance of Auckland’s wastewater network.

You will combine analytical thinking with environmental expertise to help guide decisions that safeguard waterways and communities.

Key responsibilities

  • Oversee compliance with the Network Discharge Consent, including understanding consent conditions and coordinating related compliance work across the wastewater network.
  • Organise environmental monitoring, data capture, and reporting activities.
  • Produce monthly, annual, and ad hoc reports covering network and environmental performance.
  • Review wastewater overflow information, spot patterns, and improve reporting methods and systems.
  • Advise operational, planning, and asset management teams on environmental and scientific matters.
  • Assist with incident response, including impact assessments, regulatory notifications, and investigations.
  • Support the Safeswim programme and other environmental initiatives.
  • Work closely with regulators, mana whenua, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Contribute to projects and programmes designed to reduce overflows and deliver better environmental results.

About you

You should be comfortable working with data and motivated by positive environmental outcomes. The role suits someone who is analytical, careful with detail, and effective at working with a diverse group of stakeholders.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor (Honours) degree or a higher qualification in Data Management, Environmental Science, or a similar field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in data analysis, environmental science, or compliance.
  • Strong analytical ability and excellent attention to detail.
  • Capability to interpret information and turn findings into practical action.
  • Confidence in communicating with both technical experts and non-technical audiences.
  • Well-developed organisational skills and the ability to handle several priorities at once.

What’s in it for you

  • A competitive salary package.
  • Training and development opportunities.
  • Life and income protection insurance.
  • Generous parental leave support.
  • Employee discounts with a range of major retailers.
