Job description

Summary

Yelp’s engineering environment is built around teamwork, individuality, and practical problem-solving. New engineers are expected to ship production code within their first week, with managers, mentors, and peers helping expand each person’s impact. The organization emphasizes learning, collaboration, and enjoying the work while building useful products for users.

This position is for a technically strong and forward-looking Engineering Manager who can steer the creation and delivery of reliable, high-quality data streaming products that influence decisions and innovation across Yelp.

Yelp’s data streaming platform supports key business and technical functions such as machine learning, real-time alerting, sales and marketing systems, and experimentation. The team works with data at very large scale, including millions of reviews, ad clicks, and tens of thousands of photo uploads every day, and this role is central to keeping data fresh and dependable across the ecosystem.

You will lead a team of SREs and software engineers, define the strategy for scalable pipelines, and work closely with cross-functional partners, including technical and business stakeholders, to ensure timely access to trustworthy insights.

The ideal candidate is excited by the combination of system architecture, team development, and business impact. You should care deeply about resilient infrastructure, strong engineering practices, and delivering transparent, scalable solutions that improve outcomes for the organization.

This role is open only to candidates based in the Republic of Ireland. Yelp encourages applications even from people who do not meet every stated requirement, and values potential and capability over a perfect checklist.

Responsibilities

  • Build and sustain a positive, inclusive, and enjoyable team culture aligned with Yelp’s values.
  • Coach the team through critical incidents, strategic initiatives, and day-to-day growth.
  • Shape trustworthy data streaming platforms using a “data as a product” approach to support company-wide decisions.
  • Lead the architecture, development, and expansion of modern data pipelines for both analytical and operational workloads, including improvements through AI-assisted development, monitoring, schema checks, and performance optimization.
  • Set and uphold standards for pipeline design, testing, and documentation.
  • Own service-level expectations for streaming systems and ensure readiness for quality, reliability, and incident response.
  • Work with engineering and business teams to understand needs and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Improve the developer experience through better tooling, automation, and clear documentation such as wikis and runbooks.

Requirements

  • Background in engineering or backend development with proven success in building maintainable, large-scale data streaming systems.
  • Several years of experience managing and mentoring engineering teams, ideally in streaming, with a strong focus on collaboration, growth, and business impact.
  • Strong communication skills for working with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to guide strategy for streaming architecture and both batch and real-time processing frameworks such as Paimon, Kafka, Spark, and Flink.
  • Experience delivering cloud-native solutions on AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Proficiency in a modern programming language such as Python, Ruby, Java, Objective-C, or C++.
  • Commitment to operational excellence, documentation, trust, and continuous improvement.
  • Must be located in the Republic of Ireland.

Perks and Benefits

  • Ownership of projects from the first day, with a collaborative team and lively work environment.
  • Competitive pay, pension scheme, and an optional employee stock purchase plan.
  • 25 days of paid leave, increasing to 29 days with tenure, plus one floating holiday.
  • €150 each month for remote work-related expenses.
  • €86 monthly caregiver reimbursement for dependent care support.
  • Private medical coverage, including dental and vision.
  • Flexible hours and meeting-free Wednesdays.
  • Regular 3-day hackathons, bi-weekly learning groups, and productivity spending to encourage development.
  • Access to digital events and conferences.
  • €86 per month toward eligible wellness expenses.
  • Quarterly team offsites.
