Role overview
This fixed-term leadership opportunity sits within Qantas Engineering in Sydney and is focused on the performance, governance and long-term direction of logistics, freight and customs activities that support engineering operations across Australia and overseas.
The role has a direct impact on aircraft availability and day-to-day operational continuity. It involves leadership across a complex, safety-critical and heavily regulated environment, while also helping to shape future logistics capability and transformation work.
Qantas began in 1920 in Queensland’s outback and has since become Australia’s largest regional, domestic and international airline. The wider Qantas Group operates through two airline brands, Qantas and Jetstar, and is supported by a range of subsidiary businesses that help keep the network running.
Key responsibilities
- Oversee logistics activity across global freight channels so supply arrives on time and operations stay uninterrupted.
- Manage more than $50M in logistics expenditure and drive stronger commercial outcomes through cost control and optimisation.
- Take ownership of compliance obligations spanning customs, aviation security, dangerous goods and Chain of Responsibility requirements.
- Set supplier direction and monitor the performance of freight and logistics partners.
- Lead improvement and transformation programs, including system integration and process redesign.
- Develop and strengthen a capable team with expertise in logistics, compliance and analytics.
What you will bring
- Substantial background in logistics, freight operations and financial oversight in a demanding regulated setting.
- Strong business judgement with experience handling large operating budgets and vendor performance.
- Sound knowledge of compliance frameworks covering customs, hazardous materials and transport obligations.
- Ability to lead change and influence stakeholders across multiple functions.
- Strong analytical ability and a data-led approach to decisions and continuous improvement.
- Leadership experience that includes building team capability and lifting on-time performance.
