About The Team/roleWe are seeking a Director, Assistant Controller to enhance Checkr's accounting infrastructure for its future growth. Reporting directly to the Controller, this role will lead a team of 10 professionals responsible for corporate accounting functions, including month-end close, financial reporting, and technical accounting. Close collaboration with FP&S, Tax, Corp Dev, and Legal departments is expected. The ideal candidate will bring a proven understanding of public company accounting standards and best practices, aiming to refine the close process, strengthen technical accounting capabilities, and implement robust controls and documentation suitable for external review.
What You’ll Do- Oversee and mentor a high-performing team responsible for general ledger accounting, treasury operations, and technical accounting.
- Establish, implement, and maintain effective accounting policies and procedures to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with US GAAP.
- Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes, focusing on reducing timelines and setting control and reconciliation standards appropriate for a public company.
- Act as the primary internal expert on US GAAP technical accounting matters.
- Collaborate with the Corporate Engineering team on optimizing and automating the ERP system (Oracle Fusion) and the broader accounting technology stack.
- Lead the external audit process, working closely with external auditors to ensure timely completion of the annual audit.
- Support Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) activities in partnership with the Corporate Development team.
- A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field; CPA certification is highly desirable.
- A minimum of 12 years of progressive experience with increasing scope and leadership responsibilities, preferably with Big 4 and industry experience.
- Extensive technical expertise in U.S. GAAP and other financial reporting regulations.
- A demonstrated history of successfully shortening closing cycles and developing sustainable processes, rather than merely maintaining existing ones.
- Experience operating within a SOX-controlled environment is advantageous.
- An 'A-player' mentality characterized by a strong bias for action, a commitment to raising standards, a sense of urgency, resilience in ambiguous situations, and a focus on delivering significant outcomes.
Compensation ranges are determined using geographic cost of labor. Specific ranges may vary by location. On-target Earnings OR Base Salary range (San Francisco, CA): $230,000 - $270,000 USD
On-target Earnings OR Base Salary range (Denver, CO): $195,000 - $229,000 USD
