Job description

General Purpose

The Cook is responsible for managing and operating the kitchen in the absence of the Dietary Supervisor and reports directly to them.

Essential Duties

  • Maintain a safe, orderly, clean, and sanitary kitchen and cooking area.
  • Prepare appealing and tasteful meals in large quantities, adhering to prepared menus and portion control guidelines.
  • Accurately prepare special diets and pureed foods.
  • Record food temperatures for all meals.
  • Maintain quaternary solution in sanitizer buckets.
  • Assist with serving meals and cleaning cooking areas and serving carts.
  • Report resident care concerns and potential issues to the Administrator and/or Director of Nurses.
  • Participate in the orientation and ongoing training of dietary staff.
  • Ensure all cleaning schedules are followed.
  • Supervise and work harmoniously with personnel in all departments.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum of one year of experience as a cook in a hospital or long-term care facility is required.

Language Skills: Ability to read technical procedures, recipes, and present information effectively to managers and employees.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts like fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and interpret written, oral, or scheduled instructions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must obtain and maintain a ServSafe Certificate. Knowledge and experience with PCC are preferred. Must remain in good standing with the Department of Public Health.

Physical Demands

This role requires frequent standing/walking, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking/hearing, and tasting/smelling. Occasional sitting and frequent lifting up to 50 pounds. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Requires keen vision with the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment is typically low to moderate in noise level. Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
