Community Associate

Role overview

This is a community-centered position for a partner organization, with applications and all subsequent hiring steps handled by that employer. The opportunity is based in the United Kingdom and is focused on helping a global open-source community stay active, welcoming, and connected.

In this role, you will combine community engagement, storytelling, social media, and event support to strengthen relationships with contributors, users, and enthusiasts. You will work alongside the Community Manager and other team members to surface meaningful stories, support digital spaces such as Discord, and help deliver recognition initiatives and community events. The environment is collaborative, mission-led, and grounded in open-source values, with the chance to support software used by millions of people around the world.

Accountabilities

• Develop and publish engaging community narratives, such as contributor features, project updates, and personal stories that highlight the community’s influence.
• Take an active role in the Discord community by greeting members, encouraging conversation, running sessions such as AMAs or watch parties, and helping preserve an inclusive and positive atmosphere.
• Partner with marketing stakeholders to oversee social media presence and create content that feels genuine, engaging, and representative of the community’s voice.
• Assist with the coordination and delivery of virtual and in-person events, including conferences, meetups, and industry events, covering logistics, communication, and post-event follow-up content.
• Help manage contributor appreciation efforts, including swag-related coordination, so contributors are recognized promptly and meaningfully.
• Record, adapt, and repurpose community assets such as videos, event summaries, and tutorials to expand reach and support ongoing engagement.
• Collaborate with moderators and cross-functional partners to keep community spaces healthy, active, and aligned with organizational values.

Requirements

• 2 to 3 years of experience in community management, social media, communications, content creation, or a closely related field.
• Practical experience participating in or managing Discord communities, including moderation, engagement, or community-building activities.
• Demonstrated ability to manage social channels in a way that drives real interaction, not just surface-level metrics.
• Background supporting or organizing events, including planning, coordination, or onsite execution.
• Strong organizational ability and comfort managing several priorities in a dynamic, community-led setting.
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
• Basic video editing skills are considered an advantage.
• Must be located in Europe and legally eligible to work in the region.
• Experience or interest in open-source communities, smart home technology, or Home Assistant is a plus.
