Job description
Role overview
Opal is seeking a Communications Manager who can champion the company’s narrative and bring its mission to a wider audience. This is a full-time remote role based on the East Coast of the USA, with travel to Europe twice a year.
Reporting and collaborators
You will report to Kenneth Schlenker, Opal’s CEO, and work closely with the marketing function, including social and brand, as well as other members of the leadership team.
Why this opportunity stands out
- Opal is focused on helping 1 billion people improve focus in daily life and has already helped its community reclaim more than 500 million hours.
- The role offers flexibility and ownership, with room to shape how the work gets done in a way that supports creativity and performance.
- You will join a compact, high-impact team that meets in person twice a year for collaboration and learning.
- The company is among the top 30 productivity apps in the US, offers competitive compensation and early equity, and holds a 4.8/5 rating from over 60,000 reviews.
- Opal is supported by leading investors and founders from companies such as Pinterest, Snapchat, and Revolut.
Why the role matters now
Screen time has become one of the major issues of our time, affecting over 5 billion people who use smartphones. Public discussion around digital wellbeing is growing quickly, media attention is intensifying, and regulators are increasingly focused on the topic. Apple, Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and other major technology companies are also aligning themselves with healthier technology use. Opal already has a community of more than 10 million users, including artists, athletes, founders, and creators, and the brand is receiving growing interest from journalists, schools, companies, researchers, and other organizations.
This is a pivotal moment for someone who can help shape Opal into a leading global brand for healthier technology habits and intentional use of devices.
What you will do
- Lead Opal’s public relations and media strategy from start to finish, choosing the right stories, outlets, and timing across technology, lifestyle, newsletters, podcasts, and other channels where the audience is active.
- Identify and develop strong partnerships with media brands and mission-aligned organizations.
- Partner with Kenneth on media features and speaking opportunities, including selecting the right conferences, panels, and formats that create real impact.
- Create and grow an ambassador program made up of respected community members such as artists, athletes, creators, and builders who authentically use the product.
- Monitor Opal’s share of voice across media and social channels, then use that insight to expand visibility and mentions.
- Work alongside the marketing team to surface and distribute compelling stories from the community.
- Set up core communications systems such as a press kit, newsroom, response workflow, and crisis communication plan.
What you should bring
- 3 to 5 years of experience in PR, communications, or media relations, with a track record of moving quickly and delivering measurable results.
- Experience being early at a company that people genuinely admire, ideally helping build a communications function without an existing blueprint.
- A builder’s mindset and enthusiasm for creating new systems and programs.
- Strong writing ability with a distinct voice and the flexibility to adapt to different brand tones without sounding generic.
- Deep awareness of the media ecosystem, including key journalists, newsletters, podcasts, and conference stages that matter.
- A personal connection to the mission around attention, screen time, or digital wellbeing, either through concern or genuine interest.
Bonus experience
- Existing connections with US media covering technology, wellness, or lifestyle.
- Past experience creating ambassador or creator programs.
- Background in managing or briefing outside PR agencies.
- Ability to work in both English and French.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $100,000 per year.
