Job description

Position Overview

This full-time branch role sits within Branch Banking at the branch location in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The position is graded AM-II and reports to the Branch Operation Manager. The reporting line into this role is not applicable.

Role Purpose

The cashier is accountable for managing branch cash operations in line with internal and external banking standards. The job involves recording transactions correctly in registers and systems, and carrying out end-of-day balancing and reconciliation.

Scope of the Role

The role covers daily cash transactions, CRL limit handling, branch audit support, and ATM/vault-related responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

Business Operations

  • Ensure smooth branch functioning by processing cash transactions and maintaining account-related records accurately and on time.
  • Own the branch cash-handling process, including accepting and processing cheques, drafts, dividend warrants, pay orders, and similar instruments other than bill payments, within approved limits and issuing acknowledgements on the counterfoil.
  • Pay out cash for withdrawal requests and collect cash for deposit challans.
  • Collect loan repayments according to the EMI schedule and update the system with the required entries.
  • Maintain inward and outward registers, petty cash records, and asset registers, and forward requisition forms to the Regional Head Office.
  • Reconcile cash daily against books, vouchers, and transaction records, and reflect the result in the branch end-of-day report.
  • Share responsibility for safe custody and upkeep of branch vault cash with the operations officer.
  • Engage with customers during deposits and disbursements, identify cross-sell opportunities, and keep customers informed about Ujjivan’s products and services.

Service Quality

  • Deliver polite, efficient service and resolve customer needs promptly.
  • Escalate grievances and queries to the right authority without delay.
  • Clearly explain repayment dates and support contact details during disbursement, and respond to customer questions courteously.
  • Guide customers toward alternate channels for deposits, withdrawals, and enquiries.

Operations

  • Count and verify cash at the start and end of the day before vaulting.
  • Jointly safeguard the branch’s cash, keys, and other valuables with the Assistant Branch Manager, and ensure the cash desk runs efficiently.
  • Meet the defined turnaround time for all transactions.
  • Follow all applicable regulations and bank policies related to cashiering and cash management.
  • Record and verify loan repayment transactions.
  • Confirm customer identity before cash withdrawal.
  • Check cash deposit slip accuracy as required for audit purposes.
  • Update passbooks whenever transactions require it.
  • Prepare cash bundles for currency chest deposits with note slips.

Learning and Performance

  • Stay updated on Ujjivan’s products, services, relevant regulations, and KYC requirements.
  • Complete certification programs arranged by the operations team.
  • Attend mandatory training and meet required training man-days.
  • Participate in goal setting, mid-year reviews, and performance appraisal processes within the stated timelines.

Requirements

  • A graduate degree is required; finance or commerce is preferred.
  • At least 1 to 2 years of experience handling cash at volume is expected.
  • Prior exposure to entering data in financial modules or ERP systems is needed.
  • Experience consolidating accounting data is required.
  • Strong cash handling and accounting ability, including the ability to identify counterfeit currency, is important.
  • The candidate should work systematically, with attention to detail and prompt customer service.
  • Comfort with computers is mandatory.
  • Relevant software skills are desirable, with on-the-job training provided.
  • Good numerical ability and multitasking skills are needed.
  • Positive interpersonal ability, customer orientation, and strong listening and communication skills are expected.
