About the Role
WISC-TV is seeking an Associate Editor to provide dynamic support across its magazine products, encompassing print, web, newsletters, and social media. This position collaborates closely with the head editor and digital editor to generate original content, foster audience growth, and adapt print material for digital platforms.
Responsibilities
- Write content for print department sections as needed.
- Assist with the production and editing of print issues.
- Manage the editorial workflow for 4-5 feature stories annually.
- Author 2-3 cover or feature stories each year.
- Compile and monitor story ideas for print publications.
- Contribute to special editorial projects such as BOM, BOB, and City Guide.
- Adapt all print content for publication on madisonmagazine.com.
- Produce at least 3 web stories per month.
- Review web-exclusive stories written by interns and other staff members.
- Compile monthly website statistics and stay informed about current web trends.
- Create 5-10 original content pieces for Instagram monthly, including grid posts, stories, and Reels.
- Adapt all web and print content for social media channels.
- Monitor newsletter audience metrics and provide monthly analytical summaries.
- Curate and write the weekly "In the 608" newsletter.
- Track newsletter metrics and summarize analytics monthly.
- Support magazine initiatives during all-hands-on-deck situations, such as events, Best of Madison, and other promotions.
- Research and recruit potential freelance writers.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a journalism-related field, with a preference for print or digital magazine journalism.
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communication Arts, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet numerous monthly deadlines.
- Possess strong critical thinking abilities and a professional communication style with colleagues and external contacts, including confidence in making unsolicited calls.
- Proven experience in pitching stories, interviewing sources, and reporting with sound news judgment.
- Excellent writing skills, capable of both creative voice reporting and hard news writing.
- Experience editing written content for voice, structure, and clarity in a professional environment.
- Preferred experience in writing and curating email newsletters.
- Preferred experience writing longform print or digital magazine stories.
- Basic photography skills and proficiency with image editing software like Photoshop.
