Role overview
This role is responsible for setting the technical direction of a shipping fleet and ensuring vessels operate safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with maritime requirements. The position is based in Singapore and carries the job code UPG/UPS/020-23.
Key responsibilities
- Direct the technical side of fleet operations to maintain strong vessel performance, safety standards, and adherence to global maritime rules.
- Create and roll out long-range technical plans that improve fleet output, lower running costs, and raise energy efficiency.
- Plan and supervise maintenance programs for vessels, including repairs, inspections, and dry-docking.
- Make sure operations meet statutory, flag state, and classification society rules, including ISM, SOLAS, MARPOL, and related requirements.
- Review vessel performance information, spot patterns, troubleshoot issues, and put improvement actions in place.
- Set and manage budgets for technical functions, balancing cost control with quality and safety expectations.
- Handle procurement of technical consumables, spare parts, and services so materials are available on time and at the right cost.
- Guide and develop superintendents, engineers, and other technical team members, promoting strong performance and continuous improvement.
- Maintain effective working relationships with classification societies, shipyards, suppliers, and other industry partners.
- Champion fleet renewal, energy-saving measures, and sustainability initiatives that support current industry expectations and future regulations.
- Keep up with sector trends, technology changes, and regulatory developments, and advise management on their impact.
Essential skills and qualifications
- In-depth understanding of shipping operations, vessel management, and maritime compliance requirements.
- Strong leadership experience, especially in managing technical teams and large operational portfolios.
- Solid knowledge of marine engineering systems, machinery, and the technical workings of different vessel types.
- Ability to solve complex operational and technical problems and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Experience with budgeting, procurement, and cost management in marine operations.
- Clear communication and stakeholder management skills for working with internal teams and external partners.
- Comfort using technical management platforms and fleet performance monitoring tools.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to plan and execute fleet optimization and sustainability programs.
Education and experience
- A bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or a similar discipline is required.
- A Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency, or an equivalent credential, is strongly preferred.
- The role calls for 10 to 15 years of experience in technical management within the shipping sector, with substantial leadership exposure.
- Prior experience overseeing mixed vessel types such as tankers, bulk carriers, and container ships is an advantage.
