Opportunity Overview
Cohere Health is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join their Enterprise ML team in Hyderabad, India. This pivotal technical leadership role will focus on enhancing and scaling machine learning capabilities within the Intake product. You will leverage cutting-edge machine learning, large language models, and agentic architectures to address complex clinical and operational intake workflows. Your work will automate decision-making, improve data accuracy, and alleviate administrative burdens for clinical staff. You will collaborate closely with clinical operations, product, and engineering teams to identify key drivers, influence strategic direction, and deploy production-ready ML systems that directly shape the member and provider experience at Cohere Health.
This position combines in-depth technical contributions with strategic influence, mentorship, and ownership across various projects, while also contributing to broader Enterprise ML objectives.
What you’ll do
- Design, develop, and implement sophisticated machine learning systems for retrieval, classification, prediction, and generative tasks.
- Apply advanced statistical and machine learning methodologies to derive insights from extensive structured and unstructured healthcare data.
- Lead the end-to-end model development lifecycle, encompassing experimentation, training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and refinement.
- Create and manage robust, scalable, and reusable codebases and ML infrastructure to support production applications.
- Partner with product managers, clinicians, data engineers, BI engineers, and design teams to translate business and clinical requirements into effective ML solutions.
- Drive experimentation by clearly defining problem statements, formulating testable hypotheses, and establishing rigorous evaluation frameworks aligned with business objectives.
- Communicate and present ML findings and results effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership.
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior engineers, advising on ML best practices, experimentation strategies, and system architecture.
- Act as an expert advisor on multiple initiatives, contributing to the formulation of ML strategy and performance monitoring across the organization.
What you’ll need
- Master’s degree (PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
- A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in applied machine learning or data science, with a proven track record of owning production ML systems.
- Profound expertise in Python and contemporary deep learning frameworks, such as PyTorch.
- Practical experience in developing and deploying deep learning models, including transformers, for Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications.
- A solid grasp of experimental design, model evaluation techniques, and optimization strategies for real-world production settings.
- Experience utilizing cloud platforms, preferably AWS, throughout the entire ML lifecycle (training, deployment, monitoring).
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with product, business, and clinical stakeholders to foster data-driven decision-making.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with experience presenting complex information to diverse audiences.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with generative AI, large language models, agentic systems, or Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).
- Experience in automating processes within the healthcare sector or other regulated industries.
- Familiarity with healthcare workflows such as claims processing, coding, utilization management, or network operations.
- Experience working with unstructured healthcare data, including clinical notes, OCR output, and document analysis.
- Hands-on experience with AWS services like SageMaker Studio.
