Key responsibilities

• Carry out concept, FEED, study, and detailed design work for telecom systems in line with the design basis, project requirements, codes, and standards.
• Apply engineering knowledge to both routine and non-routine technical situations.
• Develop accurate calculations, analysis notes, design reports, and procedures.
• Plan personal workload, meet deadlines and budget expectations, and organize short-term work activities effectively.
• Explain complex technical matters clearly to others and build shared understanding.
• Understand the project scope, schedule, and interdisciplinary requirements, and raise concerns early when issues appear.
• Identify changes in scope, issue change notifications promptly, and support variation order documentation and estimates.
• Work with other disciplines to produce clash-free designs.
• Coordinate with other departments to gather input for discipline drawings and deliverables.
• Maintain close alignment with planning, fabrication, project management, and other engineering teams.
• Record significant communications and share them with discipline leadership as required.
• Support bid and proposal work, including technical review, execution statements, and manhour estimates.
• Raise technical queries when information is missing or scope needs clarification.
• Prepare discipline design bases, philosophies, and technical specifications when needed.
• Help finalize deliverables lists and ensure the outputs meet functional and specification requirements.
• Attend project reviews, vendor discussions, engineering meetings, and offshore site surveys as required.
• Guide designers and review their telecom-related work products.
• Review design reports and procedures prepared for telecom engineering.
• Provide design inputs to other disciplines so their deliverables can move forward.
• Support procurement activities through requisitions, quotation reviews, technical queries, bid tabs, recommendations, and vendor follow-up.
• Update weight reports after vendor information is received.
• Check engineering work completed by others within the discipline.
• Review vendor and subcontractor submissions for specification compliance and provide comments.
• Perform design verification through single-discipline and inter-discipline checks.
• Support fabrication-related technical questions and help identify defects or rectification needs.
• Keep the Lead Engineer informed about technical, budgetary, and manpower matters.
• Contribute to progress reporting, including actual, planned, forecast, and productivity data.
• Review final vendor and subcontractor data manuals to confirm that all required documentation has been received and approved.
• Take part in internal, customer, and third-party audits relating to engineering deliverables and vendor documents.
• Help prepare responses to customer and agency reviews, including certifying authorities, auditors, and third parties.
• Capture lessons learned and enter them into the company lessons-learned system.
• Act as a technical resource for colleagues with less experience.
• Coach junior engineers on procedures, standards, calculations, software, requisitions, bid evaluations, and technical queries.
• Stay aware of the cost impact of personal and discipline-level work.
• Prepare and review telecom system definitions, philosophies, specifications, safety drawings, and system architecture.
• Prepare, update, and review logic documents and cause-and-effect diagrams in coordination with instrumentation engineering.
• Prepare and review specifications and data sheets for telecom equipment.
• Prepare and review spare parts lists for telecom equipment.
• Prepare and review telecom inputs to P&IDs and related markups based on vendor data.
• Review telecom equipment testing procedures.
• Attend telecom equipment FATs when required.
• Support closure of HAZOP action items when applicable.
• Build detailed knowledge of telecom-related systems such as FDS, GDS, CCTV, TEL/LAN, radio systems, intercom systems, PA-GA, intrusion detection systems, and access control systems.

Reporting and interfaces

The role reports to the Lead Engineer on projects and to the Supervising Engineer or Engineering Manager functionally. It works closely with engineering disciplines, fabrication, safety, document control, procurement, subcontractors, vendors, and customers, and supervises Telecom Engineers.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
• Between 8 and 15 years of oil and gas experience with a major contractor or consultant, primarily in detailed design.
• Strong familiarity with engineering design methods, analysis approaches, and the use of relevant standards, codes, and guidelines.
• Professional engineer registration or membership in a professional engineering society is preferred.
• Knowledge of functional safety, including HW/SW design to IEC 61508 and functional safety analysis, design, and operation to IEC 61511.
