Role overview

Plan International Ghana is seeking a Project Coordinator to support a high-quality programme delivery team in the Bono Region. The role sits on the Women’s Innovation for Sustainable Enterprises (WISE) project, which is designed to strengthen the economic empowerment of Ghanaian women entrepreneurs aged 19 to 55 in rural and peri-urban communities.

The project combines demand-side and supply-side approaches to improve women’s rights, wellbeing, and inclusive economic growth across three districts in Bono and Ahafo regions, as well as two districts in the Northern Region. The districts named for implementation are Sunyani Municipal, Tano North, Techiman Municipal, Kumbungu, and Tolon. The initiative is planned to begin in February 2020, run for four years, and operate with a budget of more than EUR 5.5 million.

Role scope

The coordinator will work closely with district and municipal stakeholders to help address the underlying drivers of gender inequality through gender-transformative methods. A key part of the job is ensuring meaningful engagement of men in support of women’s increased agency and empowerment. The post requires a strong commitment to feminist values such as collaboration, participation, transparency, and respect for women entrepreneurs’ decision-making power.

In this position, you will be responsible for coordinating programme quality and results, financial management and compliance, stakeholder and partner relationships, and donor reporting at district and municipal level. You will also help establish women-friendly business hubs known as HerHubs, which will function as a one-stop service point for women starting or expanding small enterprises through gender-responsive support.

The role is based in Sunyani, with travel to project communities for roughly 70% of working time.

Key responsibilities

The role focuses on building and strengthening women’s groups and associations as entry points for project delivery, while ensuring their governance and sustainability improve over time.

  • Support the creation and development of women’s groups and associations guided by cooperative values and principles.
  • Work with local NGOs to mobilise and support groups as the main channel for project interventions.
  • Help establish an institutional structure for women’s associations and apex bodies, with clear connections to individual groups.
  • Design and facilitate capacity-building initiatives covering governance, strategic planning, financial management, conflict resolution, and human resource management for groups and associations.
  • Track progress in the growth, governance, management, and overall development of self-help groups and associations, and prepare semi-annual reports on their development.

Qualifications and experience

A first degree or equivalent in Agriculture Economics, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, or Enterprise Development is required, along with at least 4 years of relevant experience in areas such as economic growth, trade, green business, value chain competitiveness, investment promotion, or agricultural development.

The ideal candidate should also bring proven experience in agricultural value chains, enterprise development, green businesses, and financial inclusion. Prior work with international NGOs, especially in progressively responsible roles at community and regional level, is important. Experience in capacity building across project design, implementation, reporting, and evaluation is also expected.

Behaviours and working style

  • Strong alignment with feminist principles, mission-driven work, and Plan International’s values.
  • High standards of transparency and integrity.
  • Inclusive leadership that empowers others and supports collaborative project management.
  • Excellent negotiation and influencing ability, with a talent for balancing differing views and achieving respectful win-win outcomes.
  • Creative thinking and a willingness to try new approaches.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in response to changing circumstances.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural competence, with the ability to build and motivate teams.
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Clear and effective communication skills.

Role-specific knowledge and capabilities

  • Deep understanding of feminist principles, gender equality, and women’s socio-economic empowerment.
  • Working knowledge of feminist monitoring and evaluation practices and results-based management tools.
  • Practical understanding of project cycle management.
  • Experience building and maintaining partnerships with private sector actors, government institutions, donors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to prioritise in a fast-moving environment, monitor performance, deliver on deadlines, and maintain strong quality standards.
