The Climate Hazards Center (CHC), founded in 2003, focuses on climate research and the development of data products that strengthen drought early warning systems and climate forecasting. Originally created to support the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), the center works to reduce risk for some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. CHC also partners with leading institutions such as USGS, NASA, NOAA, and the USDA to tackle major climate-related challenges and develop practical solutions.

Role Summary

This is a full-time, on-site Meteorologist position based in Hawassa, Sidama, Ethiopia. The role involves examining and interpreting meteorological information to support projects related to drought early warning, severe weather prediction, climate forecasting, and ocean-atmosphere interactions.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will gather and process weather and climate data, produce detailed weather analyses and reports, and contribute to research efforts and the sharing of findings with relevant stakeholders. The role also requires active collaboration with internal specialists and external partner organizations.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should bring strong knowledge of meteorology and severe weather analysis, along with an understanding of oceanography, climatology, and the physics underlying atmospheric and climate systems. The position calls for strong analytical ability, experience handling large meteorological datasets, and proficiency with weather and climate modeling tools. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, especially when working across multidisciplinary groups.

Education

A Master’s degree or higher in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Climatology, or a closely related field is required.

Additional Preference

Previous experience with climate-focused organizations or programs will be considered an added advantage.
