WHS Officer

Role overview

The WHS Officer will partner with the site operations team at a fulfillment center to implement safety policies, maintain compliance with applicable local and regional rules, and strengthen a safe working environment for associates. The role uses lean methods and continuous-improvement practices to reduce safety and ergonomic risks while building trust with operations leaders and driving change through data-backed risk assessments.

This position also requires strong communication skills, both verbal and written, along with the ability to coach operations leaders on safety standards and embed those standards into site routines. The officer is expected to bring sound knowledge of safety, environment, and ergonomics, and use that expertise to improve safety programs and standards over time.

Key responsibilities

• Guide the site in following all applicable Amazon safety policies.
• Track site performance against safety-policy requirements and create corrective action plans for any gaps.
• Deliver projects to operations on time and with the expected quality.
• Review safety metrics and examine weekly and monthly incident patterns to identify where resources are most needed.
• Carry out regular safety audits to spot unsafe equipment or processes and put measures in place to remove exposure and avoid injuries at other fulfillment centers.
• Review recordkeeping practices and entries in the global safety database to confirm alignment with global standards and local laws.
• Check workplace organization and associate behavior to make sure training, auditing, and scoring methods remain accurate and consistent.
• Lead and mentor safety associates at the assigned fulfillment center.
• Spend time on the fulfillment-center floor, gather feedback from safety teams, associates, and leaders, and keep communication open on improvement actions and closure status.

Required background

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or an equivalent qualification.
• Experience gained in industry, consulting, government, or academic research.
• At least 1 year of prior experience in Environment, Health & Safety or in mechanical engineering with a focus on industrial safety.
• Hands-on experience applying lean principles and process improvement in an operational setting.
• Ability to work a 5-day schedule, with 2 weekly days off that may change based on shift patterns and business needs because the site operates 7 days a week.

Preferred profile

• Prior safety experience in a distribution center or manufacturing setting, especially in sites with a mix of exempt and non-exempt employees and at least 200 people.
• Master’s degree or an equivalent advanced qualification is preferred.
• Background in a fast-moving organization that is growing or changing rapidly.
• Government-certified safety professional credential is preferred.
• Strong written and spoken communication skills, including the ability to work comfortably with site leadership.
• Capability to define department goals and translate them into workable strategies.
• Strong analytical ability and proven problem-solving skills.
• Comfort working in fast-paced environments with shifting priorities, direction, and strategy.
