Role Overview
The Museum of the Plains Indian in Browning, Montana is seeking a Museum Assistant to support day-to-day facility upkeep, custodial work, and general museum operations during the stated contract period.
Work Location
19 Museum Loop Rd, Browning, MT 59417
Work Schedule
- April 1 to May 30, 2026: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- June 1 to September 30, 2026: Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Maintenance and Groundskeeping
- Maintain outdoor areas by mowing grass, trimming shrubs, edging walkways, and caring for landscaping.
- Keep grounds and parking areas free of litter and trash.
- Help with basic repair work such as carpentry, painting, plumbing, and simple electrical fixes.
- Change bulbs, outlets, and switches, and assist with small leaks or drain clogs.
- Support snow clearing and other special maintenance tasks as needed.
Custodial Work
- Clean restrooms and restock supplies when required.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, and shampoo flooring.
- Clean glass surfaces and exhibit cases.
- Empty indoor trash and help maintain neat, presentable public spaces.
General Museum Support
- Help set up and take down event materials and equipment.
- Move exhibit pieces, equipment, and display materials as directed.
- Track brochure stock and assist with placing display labels.
- Provide phone support and basic front-desk assistance when needed.
- Escalate maintenance or facility issues to museum personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
This position calls for prior exposure to maintenance, facilities work, or groundskeeping. The ideal candidate should be comfortable handling janitorial duties and basic repair tasks, have a working understanding of plumbing and electrical work, and be able to take direction while also working independently. Certifications in plumbing or electrical work are beneficial but not mandatory.
