About the opportunity

First Table is hiring a Growth Engineer to help build the experimentation capability behind how diners find and reserve tables. The focus of this role is on running fast-moving tests, improving conversion journeys, and checking ideas quickly across both web and mobile products.

You will be expected to work with urgency and purpose: each test should start with a clear hypothesis, and each outcome should contribute to better booking performance. The role sits inside a dedicated Conversion & Growth team with defined OKRs, and you will partner closely with the Conversion Lead to improve onboarding, booking flow performance, and the overall customer experience across the website and mobile apps.

About the company

First Table is based in Queenstown, New Zealand, and has been operating in the hospitality technology space for more than 10 years. Its footprint covers New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

The platform helps diners discover restaurants and book tables, using technology to make it easier for restaurants to fill seats and for customers to try new places. The product supports dining offers such as early bird deals and last-table reservations, making restaurant discovery and booking quicker and more rewarding.

The company’s values are Win-Win-Win, Own It, and Grow Together, and these principles shape how the team works with one another, with restaurant partners, and with diners.

Role overview

This is a practical growth engineering position centered on experimentation and conversion improvement. You will work across the company’s Next.js web product and React Native / Expo mobile apps, using shared React and TypeScript knowledge to ship customer-facing improvements.

The environment is suited to someone who enjoys moving quickly, learning from live data, and refining ideas until they deliver meaningful results.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and refine customer-facing experiments across web and app surfaces, including A/B tests, onboarding changes, landing pages, and funnel enhancements.
  • Create rapid prototypes to test new customer experiences, prioritizing learning speed over visual perfection.
  • Set up and manage experiments through GrowthBook or an equivalent experimentation and feature flagging tool.
  • Help implement event tracking and analytics instrumentation so experiment outcomes and user behaviour can be measured accurately.
  • Develop within the Next.js web codebase and the React Native / Expo mobile apps using clean, maintainable TypeScript and React.
  • Work closely with Product, Design, Analytics, and Engineering teams to test assumptions and deliver improvements that last.

Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with React and TypeScript in web and/or mobile development; React Native experience is considered an advantage.
  • Strong interest in conversion optimisation, experimentation, and understanding customer behaviour, beyond simply writing code.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced setting where some experiments may be temporary rather than permanent features.
  • Familiarity with A/B testing, feature flags, and analytics tools.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work independently while collaborating across functions.
  • A strong ownership mindset with attention to outcomes rather than only outputs.

Benefits and perks

  • Opportunity to influence the metrics that matter, with your work affecting diner experiences across New Zealand, Australia, and the UK.
  • A high-autonomy role within a team that values speed, learning, and practical execution.
  • Remote work from Auckland, or the option to work from the Queenstown HQ, where there is a lively office culture, regular social activities, and one work-from-home day each week.
  • Perks such as free First Table bookings, referral incentives, team recognition, and regular celebrations of team wins.
  • Chance to join a well-known consumer brand that is purpose-driven, award-winning, and built around creativity, collaboration, and growth.

Application notes

Applicants should submit a CV and a cover letter. The employer has asked candidates to explain why they want to work for First Table and why they would be a strong fit. Applications are being reviewed on an ongoing basis, so early submission is encouraged.

Location

This role can be based remotely from Auckland or at the Queenstown headquarters.
