Role Overview

The Data Center Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the day-to-day monitoring of building systems and the planned maintenance of electrical and mechanical infrastructure that supports the data center environment. The role also includes making sure work orders created through CAFM are completed within the required timeline.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow and apply all site rules, procedures, and facility guidelines relevant to the role.
  • Prepare Method of Procedures (MoPs) for minor preventive maintenance activities based on vendor and OEM operation manuals.
  • Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance in line with SOPs and EOPs.
  • Complete work orders, check minor maintenance work done by on-site technicians, and observe major maintenance tasks carried out by vendors.
  • Confirm isolation, shutdown, startup, emergency shutdown, and restoration steps for data center infrastructure whenever required.
  • Perform daily site rounds, monitor the Building Management System (BMS), and clear critical and minor alarms on both the equipment panels and the BMS workstation.
  • Carry out periodic no-load and no-utility testing of engine generators.
  • Operate and manage rotating equipment while preserving redundancy.
  • Respond to unplanned incidents and emergency situations to help keep data center operations running.
  • Escalate major failures and alarms to the Facility Maintenance Supervisor and vendors.
  • Keep tools properly calibrated and in usable condition.
  • Track spare parts and consumable stock on site and maintain accurate inventory levels.
  • Document any procedure changes needed after work order execution is completed.
  • Recommend improvements to SOPs, EOPs, and MoPs through the formal change request process.
  • Implement required facility changes such as set points, redundancy rotation, and labeling updates.

Education and Knowledge Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Strong understanding of data center electrical and mechanical systems such as transformers, generators, switchgears, UPS, PDU, chillers, Computer Room Air Handlers (CRAH), FCUs, chilled water pumps, and fuel systems.
  • Working knowledge of engineering design calculations, principles, codes, and standards across both mechanical and electrical disciplines.
  • Good awareness of health and safety practices, especially when working around electrical or energized equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a data center environment is required.
  • Experience should include MEP equipment specifications, performance requirements, operating conditions, redlines, site configurations, startup/shutdown procedures, LOTO, and isolation.
  • Hands-on exposure to BMS monitoring and alarm handling is required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to handle issues and incidents in the data center at any time, including day or night.
  • Confidence in responding to emergencies and communicating issues clearly to vendors and the Facility Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Capability to identify the root cause of equipment failures.
  • Comfortable managing multiple tasks and adjusting to changing priorities.
  • Ability to guide electrical and mechanical technicians.
  • Willingness to work rotating on-call shifts.
  • Strong performance under pressure and the ability to juggle several responsibilities at once.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
