Role purpose
This position supports plant technical services with a strong preference for a chemical science background. The role centers on laboratory testing, trend tracking, safe chemical handling, timely reporting, and close coordination with operations and maintenance teams to help ensure plant reliability, compliance, and efficient performance.
Key responsibilities
The selected candidate will manage routine analytical work, maintain records, and help drive safe and compliant laboratory operations.
- Carry out regular testing and analysis for water, oil, LOI, flue gas, bulk chemicals, and mill performance.
- Share results promptly with the relevant internal customers.
- Escalate any unusual readings or trends without delay.
- Keep logbooks, LIMS records, and all laboratory compliance documentation up to date.
- Follow the approved testing plan and maintain full testing compliance.
- Handle chemical dosing safely and consistently follow PPE requirements.
- Work with internal stakeholders to provide accurate and timely recommendations.
- Dispose of laboratory waste in a safe manner and in line with procedure.
Customer focus
- Provide accurate and timely reports for water and oil testing.
- Communicate deviations clearly and quickly.
- Support the Boiler, Turbine, and Utility teams with laboratory inputs.
Cost and resource management
- Use laboratory chemicals, glassware, and consumables efficiently.
- Help protect laboratory instruments and prevent avoidable losses.
Inventory and loss prevention
- Maintain minimum and maximum inventory levels.
- Track expiry dates to prevent dead stock.
- Support proactive monitoring to avoid shutdown-related losses.
Systems and equipment care
- Take part in WCM small group activities.
- Monitor equipment condition through LLF practices.
- Maintain the basic condition of the equipment assigned as owner.
- Evaluate trends and performance for water, LOI, flue gas, mill performance, and oil quality.
Coordination and teamwork
- Coordinate regularly with Operations, Maintenance, Stores, and the Laboratory team.
People and capability building
- Continuously build personal and team skills.
- Follow SOPs strictly and maintain laboratory standards.
- Support training, learning, and team development.
Process discipline
- Work according to approved SOPs and testing frequencies.
- Contribute to proper chemical dosing optimization.
Safety requirements
- Understand the PTW system, including general permits, hot work, confined space work, and work at height.
- Ensure associates use the required PPE.
- Conduct toolbox talks for associates.
- Report near misses and potential incidents.
- Stay aware of MSDS, HIRA, SWI, and emergency preparedness requirements.
Governance and compliance
- Maintain documentation in an audit-ready condition.
- Ensure laboratory compliance at all times.
Sustainability
- Optimize blowdown practices to support water conservation.
- Dispose of laboratory waste as per SOP.
Continuous improvement
- Participate in kaizen competitions and improvement initiatives.
- Attend training programs regularly.
- Train workmen and encourage them to contribute suggestions and kaizen ideas.
Required knowledge
- Working understanding of water and oil chemistry.
- Basic knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with others.
- Team development and teamwork mindset.
