About the Role

This senior leadership position is responsible for guiding and expanding the software engineering function across several product areas. The Engineering Director will lead 4 to 6 Engineering Managers and own the full engineering delivery cycle across frontend, backend, QA, and platform-related work. The role reports directly to the CPTO and is expected to stay close to the technical details while making strong decisions around architecture, process, scaling, tooling, recruitment, and delivery.

Key Responsibilities

• Take ownership of delivery across multiple engineering squads and set high standards for quality, consistency, and speed.
• Drive planning, milestone definition, and launch readiness across product areas.
• Set and uphold engineering practices for code quality, testing, incident handling, and post-incident reviews.
• Lead large-scale technical programmes such as platform or processor migrations, coordinating dependencies and keeping stakeholders aligned from start to finish.
• Spot delivery risks early and take action before they grow into larger issues.
• Recruit, grow, and scale a strong team of Engineering Managers and engineers as the organisation expands.
• Own the hiring process for engineering, from sourcing strategy through to interview calibration and bar-raising assessments.
• Use delivery metrics to evaluate performance, identify strengths and gaps, and make thoughtful decisions about development, stretch opportunities, or transitions.
• Shape a team culture that is direct, collaborative, and focused on outcomes.
• Stay technically engaged enough to review architecture decisions, evaluate trade-offs, and steer teams toward maintainable, scalable systems.
• Promote AI-assisted development practices as a meaningful productivity multiplier across engineering.
• Partner with Product, Design, Compliance, and Operations to ensure engineering consistently supports business outcomes.
• Work with external vendors and technology partners using strong commercial judgment.
• Represent engineering in leadership discussions and explain technical issues in clear business language.

Requirements

• Proven experience leading delivery in fast-paced environments where execution quality matters.
• Strong ability to develop managers and build high-performing teams over time.
• Solid technical credibility, with experience building or scaling complex backend systems and contributing meaningfully to architecture discussions.
• Background in fintech, ideally across payments, lending, or banking.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to brief senior leadership clearly on incidents, roadmaps, and hiring decisions.
