Ecologist

Overview

This permanent Ecologist position is based in Cardiff, Wales, and offers a salary of GBP 32,000 to GBP 39,000 per year. The role involves delivering ecological services across projects in Wales and throughout the wider UK, combining field surveys, technical analysis, reporting, and advisory work.

Role summary

As part of the ecology function, you will contribute across the full project lifecycle. The job includes habitat and protected species surveys, ecological assessments, preparation of technical documentation, and guidance on ecological matters. You will collaborate with clients, planners, environmental specialists, and project managers so that ecological requirements are considered in project planning and delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out habitat surveys and protected species surveys.
• Prepare ecological assessments and technical reports.
• Provide ecological input and advice throughout project stages.
• Interpret survey data and turn findings into clear recommendations.
• Work with clients, planners, environmental specialists, and project managers.
• Balance site-based work, written analysis, and stakeholder communication.

Requirements

• A degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a closely related subject.
• Prior experience in ecological consultancy or a comparable environmental role.
• Working knowledge of UK ecological law, planning policy, and accepted guidance.
• Practical experience conducting ecological surveys and producing technical reports.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Good organisation and time-management ability.
• Capability to work independently and also contribute effectively in a team setting.
• A full UK driving licence.
• Full legal right to work in the UK.
• Residence in Cardiff or within a reasonable commuting distance of the office.
