Role overview

Murphy is hiring a Materials Expeditor to join its Energy business in Leeds. The company is known for deep in-house expertise, a strong history of innovation, and its ability to deliver added value across evolving market needs. Its work spans major transmission and distribution projects across four countries, supporting long-term energy security.

The business provides design, construction, and commissioning services, and delivers EPC work for regulated and private clients, alongside technical and engineering solutions across conventional power and energy transition markets. A focus on sustainability and ongoing innovation has helped it build long-standing relationships with major energy providers in several countries.

What the role is responsible for

This position is focused on maintaining a reliable approach to materials quality control and expediting so that vendor compliance, inspection, testing, certification, and material release requirements are completed in line with project and company expectations. The role reports to the QC, Materials & Expediting Manager and works closely with the Specialist Materials Team to deliver materials quality and expediting support.

Key duties

  • Carry out vendor inspection and expediting work for specialist mechanical piping materials supplied by vendors and subcontractors.
  • Attend supplier inspections, factory acceptance tests, and quality release activities in the UK and overseas.
  • Examine vendor records such as material certificates, inspection and test plans, test documentation, and manufacturing dossiers to confirm they meet project standards.
  • Make sure all required inspection, testing, and verification steps are completed according to the purchase order and specification before material is released.
  • Work alongside the Specialist Materials Team and suppliers to close out technical or quality concerns that affect manufacture, release, or delivery.
  • Track, escalate, and manage non-conformances, delays, and documentation problems through the relevant quality procedures.
  • Prepare and update expediting reports, inspection status reports, and release logs to support project progress.
  • Help ensure materials quality and traceability requirements are met in line with project specifications and company procedures.
  • Ensure all work follows applicable codes, standards, statutory requirements, and company processes.
  • Visit vendor sites in the UK and internationally as needed for the project.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in vendor expediting, materials coordination, inspection, or quality roles within oil and gas, pipelines, energy, or other highly regulated engineering environments.

Strong knowledge of mechanical piping materials is essential, including pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, and fabricated assemblies. The role also calls for experience reviewing certification, supplier documentation, inspection records, and manufacturing dossiers, as well as coordinating inspections, FATs, release activities, and supplier progress.

You should be able to read and interpret drawings, specifications, datasheets, and ITPs, and have a solid understanding of traceability, quality control, and release requirements in mechanical piping projects. Experience with gas network operators such as National Gas or Cadent is a plus, though not required. Familiarity with structural steelwork and EN 1090 would also be an advantage, but is not essential. A good working knowledge of relevant industry codes, standards, and quality processes is expected.

Benefits

  • 27 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, with the option to purchase 2 extra days each year; leave entitlement increases with service length.
  • Discretionary yearly bonus and an annual pay review.
  • Pension contributions above market rates.
  • Life cover, health screening, and enhanced sick pay.
  • Improved maternity and paternity pay, plus a return-to-work maternity bonus.
  • Additional holiday for employees getting married, along with a wedding bonus.
  • Subsidised canteen facilities at core locations.
  • Continued investment in professional development.
  • Access to retail discounts and cashback, reduced gym memberships, cycle-to-work support, and similar employee benefits.
