Role summary
The housekeeper supports day-to-day cleanliness and safety in a long-term care setting by keeping the facility orderly, sanitary, and free from clutter and unpleasant odors.
Key duties
- Keep shared spaces tidy throughout the day, including the lobby, restrooms, drinking fountains, and floor areas.
- Clean resident bedrooms and bathrooms on a regular basis.
- Ensure handrails remain clean and clear of debris.
- Remove dust, dirt, and food residue from walls, mirrors, windows, light fixtures, towel bars, and towel dispensers.
- Empty waste bins and replace liners as needed.
- Sweep and mop flooring.
- Follow safety precautions while cleaning, including using caution signs and storing supplies and chemicals safely away from residents.
- Use cleaning tools and equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Keep housekeeping carts, equipment, and storage areas clean, organized, and sanitary.
- Report resident safety concerns immediately to the Director of Housekeeping, Administrator, or Director of Nursing.
- Alert the Director of Housekeeping when additional supplies are needed.
- Bring a courteous attitude, strong customer service approach, and a positive mindset to the role.
- Manage time well and stay productive during shifts.
- Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or GED is required. Prior experience in a long-term care facility is preferred. The role also requires the ability to understand procedure manuals and written or verbal directions, use basic arithmetic, and handle practical problem-solving in situations with limited standardization. The candidate must be fluent in both spoken and written English.
Physical and work conditions
This position does not include supervisory duties. Physical requirements include occasionally lifting or moving up to 25 pounds and regularly sitting, kneeling, standing, walking, speaking, and reading or hearing. The job may also involve routine use of office equipment such as a copier/scanner/fax machine, telephone, and calculator, along with daily use of housekeeping supplies and tools. The environment is generally low to moderate in terms of odor and noise. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.

Compensation
The pay range for this role is $18.00 to $20.00 per hour.
