Downer is seeking an experienced civil drainlayer to join its Wellington team and contribute to essential infrastructure work that supports the city’s day-to-day operations. This is a practical, on-site position focused on building and maintaining drainage systems for wastewater and stormwater networks.

The opportunity

With continued growth in the region, Downer is looking for a qualified drainlayer who enjoys hands-on work in the field and wants to help deliver critical community infrastructure. The role involves working in trenches and being part of a crew that delivers safe, high-quality outcomes.

Key duties

• Build wastewater, stormwater, and drainage infrastructure
• Install PVC, PE, and concrete piping as well as manholes, catchpits, and chambers
• Work on wastewater and stormwater projects
• Review and follow plans, drawings, and specifications
• Carry out confined-space tasks and live network tie-ins

Skills and experience needed

Downer is looking for someone who takes pride in good workmanship, works well in a close-knit team, and is comfortable being actively involved on the tools rather than only overseeing work.

• Recognised drainlaying qualification
• Proven background in stormwater and wastewater infrastructure
• Working knowledge of 3 Waters; potable water experience is an advantage
• Strong hands-on capability
• Clear communication and teamwork skills
• Strong focus on safety and quality
• Full Class 1 or Class 2 driver’s licence
• Ability to plan ahead, think quickly, and adapt to changing situations
