Data Analyst

Role overview

This Richmond, Virginia based Data Analyst position supports improvements in workflow, clinical data review, and validation activities that shape decisions across Health Services. The work is closely tied to clinical practice and the experience of end users, and the role partners with the Health Services EHR team as well as technical teams handling EHR setup and development.

Key responsibilities

• Document clinical workflows and translate day-to-day practice into structured EHR data processes.
• Identify workflow gaps, recommend improvements, and help standardize practices across state facilities.
• Extract EHR data to respond to clinical and operational questions, then validate the results against dependable sources.
• Create reports and data visualizations that support evidence-based decisions for leadership and clinical teams.
• Test and validate EHR updates from the end-user perspective, including support for MAR and related project components.
• Serve as a responsive point of contact for medical staff on EHR-related questions and requests.
• Maintain documentation and handoff materials so work can continue smoothly over time.

Required experience and competencies

• Proven ability to independently organize unstructured medical text into coded data and map it to standard vocabularies for interoperability, clinical decision support, coding, and analytics.
• Strong knowledge of medical vocabularies from both clinical and informatics viewpoints.
• Hands-on experience extracting information from electronic health record systems.
• Experience turning clinical questions into data analyses using EHR data.
• Experience validating EHR data against outside data sources.
• Experience cross-checking EHR data through triangulation with other information inside the EHR.
• Experience documenting workflows from clinical practice into EHR data entry and data management.
• Practical experience applying national EHR standards to an EHR product.
• Experience standardizing processes during an EHR implementation.
• Experience analyzing and documenting clinical workflows in a multidisciplinary care environment.
• Ability to communicate clinical and data findings clearly to non-technical audiences, including medical staff and leadership.
• Experience working with multiple stakeholders in a multidisciplinary clinical setting.

Preferred background

• A clinical or medical background such as nursing, medicine, pharmacy, or a similar field is preferred.
• Experience in correctional or institutional healthcare is desirable; similar experience in other complex, multidisciplinary clinical settings may also be considered.
• Prior work with EHR systems in a clinical capacity is required.
