Role overview

An expanding software engineering team is hiring an intermediate or senior developer to help create and improve technology used in eCommerce and logistics. The product is a multi-carrier delivery platform that gives retailers a single place to manage parcel tracking, customer enquiries, delivery problems and claims.

The position is based in Southampton, Hampshire, with a hybrid setup of 2-3 days per week in the office. The salary on offer is £60,000 to £70,000.

This is mainly a backend position focused on TypeScript, Node.js and cloud services, although there is room to work on full-stack work for someone who wants broader exposure.

The team is also looking at practical ways to use AI-assisted development and agentic systems to improve how software is built and delivered. Prior specialist AI tooling knowledge is not required, but an interest in modern engineering workflows and openness to tools such as Claude, Cursor and GitHub Copilot is expected.

What you will do

You will join an experienced development team involved in designing, building, testing, deploying and supporting software used by retailers and logistics providers.

• Develop backend services and REST APIs using TypeScript and Node.js
• Produce code that is well-structured, tested and easy to maintain
• Help design and deliver new features and services
• Work on the upkeep and enhancement of live systems
• Collaborate with product, technical and leadership teams to clarify needs and shape solutions
• Deploy, support and maintain software and infrastructure
• Use modern engineering approaches such as CI, automated testing, infrastructure as code and containerisation
• Pick up GCP if your current cloud background is mainly AWS or Azure
• Consider sensible uses for AI-assisted development tools within the team’s workflow

What the employer is looking for

This opportunity may suit a mid-level developer seeking greater ownership, or a senior engineer wanting a hands-on role in a product-led environment.

• Hands-on experience with TypeScript and Node.js
• Backend API development experience, ideally with Express, Nest.js or similar frameworks
• Working knowledge of MongoDB and/or relational databases
• Testing experience using tools such as Jest or similar
• Exposure to cloud platforms; GCP is helpful but not mandatory
• Experience with Docker and Docker Compose
• Familiarity with CI/CD or continuous delivery environments
• Understanding of infrastructure as code, ideally Terraform or a similar tool
• Comfort working as part of a collaborative software team

Experience with AWS or Azure is fully acceptable if you are keen to build GCP skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with React or Next.js
• Exposure to Kubernetes or serverless architectures
• Understanding of GitOps principles
• Use of feature flags, dark launches or similar release approaches
• Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor or Claude Code
• Exposure to LLM-powered agents, APIs or pipelines using tools such as OpenAI, Anthropic, LangChain or similar
