Data Engineer

The role

Instil is hiring a Data Engineer to build and support data platforms and pipelines with strong commercial experience. In this position, you will work directly with cloud-based data tooling and collaborate with engineers and analysts to create dependable, well-structured data that can power analytics and other downstream needs.

The role is hands-on and delivery-oriented, with emphasis on designing, implementing, and refining data pipelines while building deeper expertise in modern data engineering practices.

Essential experience and capabilities

• Between 2 and 5 years of paid, commercial experience in data engineering or a closely related data-focused software engineering position.
• Practical experience handling production data, including data quality, reliability, and error/failure management considerations.
• Strong analytical problem-solving ability and comfort working when requirements are incomplete, shifting, or still being defined.
• Good communication skills and a track record of working with cross-functional teams.

Technical background

Commercial experience in a mix of the following areas is expected:

• Python for data transformation, processing, and pipeline creation
• AWS data services such as S3, Lambda, and Glue, or equivalent cloud-native services
• Building, maintaining, and improving ETL or ELT pipelines in live production settings
• Advanced SQL, including complex querying and query performance optimisation
• Working with a cloud data warehouse such as Snowflake or a comparable platform, including data models, pipeline support, and warehouse objects
• Managing semi-structured data such as JSON and Parquet as well as structured datasets

Desirable experience

• Experience using orchestration or scheduling tools for data workflows
• Exposure to CI/CD practices for data pipelines
• Understanding of analytics or BI use cases and the people who consume data
• Awareness of data governance, access control, or security principles
• Experience in agile, delivery-focused teams
