Field Engineer - Ontario

Role overview

This full-time Field Engineer position is based in Ontario and reports to the Project Manager. The role sits within the Eastern Canada District, under the Field Operations department, with a focus on transportation work. As the lead engineer on the project, you will support safe, high-quality delivery and ensure engineering activities are handled professionally, accurately, and ethically.

What you will do

You will take ownership of contract administration, project planning and scheduling, and project reporting. In addition, you will advise project leadership on contractual, legal, and other project-related matters while helping keep field operations organized and compliant.

Field engineering duties

• Interpret drawings and specifications for crews and field supervisors.
• Carry out quantity measurements and calculate completed or installed work percentages.
• Help prepare work plans and work packages.
• Support field surveying and layout, including elevations, control points, and as-built information.
• Compile and verify daily labor timesheets.
• Help prepare Job Hazard Analyses.
• Take part in safety reviews, toolbox talks, larger safety meetings, and safety training.
• Arrange and coordinate material deliveries.
• Plan, schedule, and coordinate work groups on site.
• Oversee field operations.

Office engineering duties

• Prepare material takeoffs using drawings, specifications, and other contract documents.
• Complete basic engineering calculations and technical drafting for field support.
• Help assemble data for submittals and transmittals to clients, vendors, subcontractors, government agencies, and internal teams.
• Assist with purchase orders, subcontracts, minor sourcing, and purchasing tasks as needed.
• Support schedule updates and maintenance.
• Maintain project records and correspondence such as daily reports, photos, RFIs, and memorandums.
• Enter data into the job cost system and review cost reports with site management.
• Help prepare change orders and as-built information for project manager review.
• Provide field support and supervise subcontractor work.

Estimating support

• Review historical project data and factor in production and cost information for bid preparation.
• Review plans and specifications for assigned bids, identify risk areas, and flag them to the Senior Estimator.
• Complete material and quantity takeoffs from bid documents.

Work location and mobility

The first assignment is expected in the GTA. You may also be asked to begin in estimating before moving onto a project. The company’s approach to staffing is flexible, and teams may be relocated depending on where work is available and how individual development goals align with business needs.

Eastern Canada District handles work across highways, bridges, mass transit, mine site development, open pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind-power plants, dams, and industrial projects. Its operations support both the construction and mining sectors in Eastern Canada.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a similar field is required.
• You must hold a P.Eng. license, be registered as an Engineer-in-Training, or be eligible to register.
• At least 3 years of construction field experience is needed.
• You should be able to travel and relocate when required.
• You need the ability to review engineering plans, specifications, and contract documents and spot inconsistencies.
• You must be able to access all areas of an active construction site in changing climates and conditions.
• A strong drive for excellence and initiative is expected.
• You should have a solid work ethic and be willing to do what it takes to get the job done correctly the first time.
• Integrity and ethical judgment are essential.
• A strong commitment to safety is required.
• Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are necessary.
