Role Summary
The Manual Tack-off Operator is responsible for preparing vehicle bodies for primer, basecoat, or clearcoat application by removing dust, lint, fibers, and small surface contamination. The role is essential for ensuring paint-ready surfaces, maintaining strict cleanliness standards, reducing paint defects, and helping improve first-pass yield. This position directly supports final surface preparation, appearance quality, and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out manual tack-off on vehicle bodies before paint application.
- Remove dust, loose particles, fibers, and other minor contamination from body surfaces.
- Use approved tack cloths, air blowers, and cleaning tools according to work instructions.
- Ensure full coverage of exterior panels, visible interior areas, edges, and critical zones.
- Follow the proper tack-off order and standard motion techniques.
- Verify that surfaces meet paint-ready cleanliness expectations.
- Detect and escalate unusual contamination such as oil stains, water marks, or paint-related defects.
- Avoid adding any secondary contamination during the tack-off process.
- Help maintain appearance quality by reducing dirt-related paint issues.
- Follow control plans and inspection standards.
- Observe all safety requirements for paint booth and material-handling areas.
- Wear required personal protective equipment, including gloves, masks, coveralls, and safety shoes.
- Handle tack cloths and cleaning supplies safely and correctly.
- Keep the workstation clean and well organized.
- Use and care for tack cloths, air blow guns, and related cleaning equipment properly.
- Prevent excess use or improper use of tack materials that could leave residue.
- Immediately report damaged tools or unusual conditions.
- Assist with minor housekeeping tasks and equipment checks when needed.
- Meet assigned takt time and production targets consistently.
- Work in line with standard operating instructions and paint shop discipline.
- Take part in shift handovers and daily production communication.
- Support smooth line operation by reducing delays and rework.
- Contribute to 5S and continuous improvement efforts.
Requirements
- High school certificate or an equivalent qualification, or other certification.
- 1 to 2 years of experience in an automotive paint shop or surface-preparation role is preferred.
- Background in tack-off, paint booth, or appearance quality work is an advantage.
- Basic understanding of safety and cleanliness expectations in paint operations.
- Willingness to work in shifts and follow production schedules.
