About Trees for the Future

Trees for the Future (TREES) has spent more than 30 years helping farming families strengthen livelihoods, restore degraded land, and build resilient food systems through agroforestry. Its Forest Garden Approach supports farmers to plant trees, diversify crops, and improve both household incomes and ecosystem health. The organisation works in Kenya, Mali, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda, and has planted over 350 million trees so far.

In Tanzania, TREES has operated since 2015 across Mwanza, Simiyu, Singida, Tabora, and Iringa, partnering with farmers in 11 district councils to support sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, food security, and poverty reduction.

Role Overview

The Driver will provide dependable, safe, and efficient transport for staff, goods, official visitors, and organisational assets. This position also supports field teams with logistics and administrative errands that help program delivery run smoothly. The post is based in Simiyu (Bariadi), Tanzania, and reports to the Administration Officer.

Applicants must be legally authorised to work in Tanzania.

Key Duties

The role covers passenger transport, delivery of documents and supplies, support for meetings and field visits, and general logistical assistance for operations. It also includes responsibility for vehicle condition, compliance with safety requirements, and accurate record keeping.

Responsibilities

  • Transport staff, consultants, partners, visitors, and other authorised passengers safely and on schedule to field locations, meetings, workshops, community activities, and other official destinations.
  • Provide transport support for program implementation, monitoring visits, emergency movement, and other field-based activities.
  • Carry documents, equipment, tools, supplies, and other organisational items securely and promptly.
  • Assist with logistics and administration such as procurement trips, banking runs, courier tasks, airport transfers, and similar assignments.
  • Help organise transport plans and vehicle use for meetings, trainings, workshops, and events, including loading and unloading materials when needed.
  • Inspect the assigned vehicle before and after trips to confirm it is fit for the road, checking fuel, oil, coolant, tyres, brakes, lights, battery, and other key parts.
  • Keep the vehicle clean, safe, secure, and in good working condition at all times.
  • Watch for mechanical problems, report issues quickly, and coordinate servicing, repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance.
  • Maintain complete vehicle logs covering mileage, fuel use, maintenance, repairs, and utilisation.
  • Ensure insurance, registration, licences, permits, and inspection certificates are current and available when needed.
  • Follow Tanzanian traffic laws, road safety rules, and TREES policies and procedures.
  • Use defensive driving practices and make sure passengers follow safety rules such as wearing seat belts.
  • Consider road, weather, and security conditions when selecting routes and planning travel.
  • Report accidents, incidents, damage, breakdowns, security issues, traffic offences, or other risks to the supervisor immediately.
  • Protect the confidentiality and security of passengers, documents, information, and organisational property.
  • Maintain respectful, professional relationships with staff, visitors, service providers, government officials, and other stakeholders.
  • Represent TREES courteously and professionally in all interactions.
  • Support effective program delivery through reliable transport and logistical assistance.
  • Carry out any other official duties assigned by the Administration Officer or management.

Who You Are

You are someone who supports TREES’ mission and values, works safely and responsibly, communicates well with others, stays organised, and can handle practical vehicle-related issues and day-to-day operational support.

  • At least four years of professional driving experience is required, preferably in an NGO or corporate environment.
  • Good knowledge of Tanzanian road networks, traffic regulations, and defensive driving methods.
  • Basic mechanical ability to handle minor vehicle troubleshooting.
  • Fluency in Swahili is essential; basic English communication is an advantage.
  • Strong time management, organisation, and reliability.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
