Overview
Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is hiring two full-time permanent Data Analysts in Wellington CBD. This position offers a salary range of $75,114 to $88,266, plus KiwiSaver and wellness benefits.
This is a great opportunity for someone beginning their analytics journey or ready to progress into a more advanced data role. You will join the Data Service Delivery unit and support MBIE’s energy modelling programme, contributing analysis that informs policy development and design.
What the role involves
The role focuses on the Markets Domain’s energy modelling programme. You will examine possible energy supply and demand futures, create insights that support policy decisions, and track how policies are performing over time.
You will also contribute to wider team priorities, working alongside Senior Data Analysts while deepening your knowledge of the energy sector. A key part of the role is communicating findings clearly and making sure analysis is practical, understandable, and useful for decision-makers.
Stakeholder engagement is part of the job, including working with people across MBIE, other government agencies, and the energy sector.
Innovation is valued in this role, with an expectation that you will help improve modelling tools and methods so they continue to deliver reliable and meaningful insights.
Team context
The Domains team within Data Service Delivery supports policy analysis, regulatory monitoring, and decision-making through high-quality data assets across five aligned data domains. The Data Science team works with the Domains team to apply advanced analytics, statistical modelling, and machine learning to complex problems, using modern data technologies and reusable approaches to create better outcomes and drive innovation.
This position reports to the Data Science Manager and supports the strategic priorities of the Markets Domain, with a focus on Energy and Resources. The work spans the full data pipeline, from collecting source data through to delivering insights that guide decisions.
Key duties
- Identify, source, and procure relevant data
- Prepare official statistics related to the energy sector
- Support New Zealand’s reporting obligations to international energy agencies
- Build projections for energy supply, demand, and greenhouse gas emissions
- Carry out modelling and analytical work to support policy development and design
Skills and experience needed
We are looking for someone with a tertiary qualification, or equivalent practical experience, in statistics, applied economics, econometrics, data science, or another quantitative field. Recent statistics graduates are welcome to apply.
You should bring strong analytical ability, including experience working with data, drawing out insights, and explaining results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Hands-on experience with R, or a similar statistical programming language, and Power BI is expected, along with an interest in forecasting, modelling, econometrics, or related analytical techniques.
Knowledge of economics, energy, or public policy would be an advantage.
Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
Location and working arrangement
These roles are based in Wellington CBD and are not suitable for working full time remotely from another location.
