Role purpose

The role is responsible for inspecting tower sections with a focus on weld integrity, dimensional correctness, and compliance with surface treatment requirements. It involves using non-destructive testing methods to identify defects, managing quality records, checking supplier adherence, and validating protective coatings. The position also contributes to process improvement, supports the development of junior inspectors, works closely with manufacturing teams, and helps ensure tower manufacturing quality meets relevant standards.

Core responsibilities

• Carry out detailed chemical and mechanical tests to confirm the quality and fitness of materials used in tower fabrication.
• Review test results to support material selection and verify compliance with structural and industry requirements.
• Manage metrology activities so that tower parts are produced to exact specifications.
• Define and follow calibration routines for measurement instruments to preserve accuracy and repeatability.
• Apply in-process quality control across fabrication and forming operations to keep work aligned with defined quality benchmarks.
• Coordinate with machining teams to ensure machined parts fit properly within the full tower assembly.
• Build and maintain corrosion-protection practices that extend tower life and improve safety.
• Use metallurgical checks and non-destructive testing to identify possible corrosion-related issues early.
• Inspect tower sections, paying close attention to weld quality, dimensional tolerances, and surface treatment compliance.
• Perform NDT inspections such as ultrasonic testing and magnetic particle inspection to identify weld and joint defects.
• Support supplier quality reviews by inspecting tower component vendors and verifying process compliance at supplier locations.
• Escalate quality concerns to the lead and work with suppliers on corrective actions and improvements.
• Examine surface preparation and coating quality on tower sections for both onshore and offshore applications.
• Check anti-corrosion coating quality for consistency, thickness, and conformity to surface-preparation standards.
• Ensure tower components meet applicable standards including ISO 10721 and IEC 61400-23.
• Update inspection methods as tower manufacturing technologies and quality expectations evolve.
• Take part in improvement initiatives aimed at strengthening weld quality and reducing defects.
• Share inspection findings with production and support corrective actions that improve tower quality.
• Assist in training junior inspectors on advanced inspection practices for tower sections, welds, and coatings.
• Keep up to date with newer inspection tools and standards to strengthen team capability.
• Work alongside manufacturing teams to embed quality requirements into the production process.
• Address shop-floor quality issues and support defect resolution in tower components.
• Maintain complete inspection records covering weld reports, dimensional checks, and surface finish verification.
• Ensure documentation is audit-ready and provides full traceability for tower components.

External: Suppliers of tower components and external testing/inspection agencies.

Qualifications and experience

A diploma or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is required. The role calls for more than 5 years of experience in inspection and quality control of tower sections and welds, along with working knowledge of NDT methods and tower manufacturing quality standards.
