Role overview
Derbyshire County Council’s Network Planning team is looking for a motivated Technician to join its Street Works and Temporary Traffic Management function in Derby. This position suits someone who works well in a team, has solid technical capability and pays close attention to detail.
In this role, you will support coordinated activity across the highway network, helping ensure day-to-day operations are delivered safely and with minimal disruption to road users.
What you will do
You will take responsibility for temporary traffic management arrangements, road closures, temporary traffic signals and the approval of abnormal load movements. The aim is to make sure these activities are managed safely and reliably for everyone using the network.
The job also includes reviewing and assessing planned works on the highway, checking that the proposed methods are appropriate, safe and designed to reduce disruption as much as possible.
Working with senior technicians and colleagues, you will help make sure permit conditions are suitable and followed correctly, while also dealing with conflicts that may arise from other works taking place on the highway.
Another important part of the role is supporting the new Highways Network Information Centre. You will monitor Pre-emptive Traffic Management Systems and make operational decisions using IT and messaging tools to help limit disruption and congestion during unexpected incidents on the network.
You will also communicate with a range of stakeholders and contribute to building strong working relationships.
What we are looking for
We are seeking someone with a constructive, positive approach to solving problems, a strong commitment to customer service and a clear focus on putting customer needs first.
You should be comfortable working with others, able to stay effective under pressure and capable of managing multiple tasks at the same time.
