Role overview
This role sits within the Gynaecology service and is responsible for assessing incoming referrals against approved triage criteria and supporting tools. Working alongside the Lead Triage Nurse and consultant colleagues, the post holder will decide whether referrals should be accepted, rejected, upgraded, or downgraded.
Main purpose of the role
The first point of contact for referrals coming from primary care or other specialties, this position involves reviewing each referral to judge urgency and suitability. The work requires careful decision-making in a busy, fast-moving environment where patients may present with a wide range of gynaecological symptoms and levels of clinical complexity.

Responsibilities
- Review all referrals entering the Gynaecology service and determine the appropriate level of urgency.
- Use approved triage criteria and decision-making tools to assess whether a referral should be accepted, rejected, escalated, or stepped down.
- Work closely with the Lead Triage Nurse and consultant team when handling complex cases.
- Act as the initial contact point for referrals received from primary care and other specialties.
- Manage cases involving a range of gynaecological symptoms and varying clinical severity.
- Maintain a fast, accurate, and well-prioritised workflow in a demanding setting.
Requirements
- Registered Nurse qualification at degree level.
- Additional training, experience, or enhanced practice equivalent to postgraduate diploma level.
- Substantial background in gynaecology.
- Prior training in risk management.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development.
- Experience working at Band 5 level or equivalent.
- Ability to contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience with service audits.
- Experience providing clinical supervision.
- Previous exposure to complex risk management.
- Previous experience in case management.
- Strong organisational ability and the capacity to manage pressure.
- Ability to prioritise a demanding workload.
- Desirable: advanced training in risk management.
- Desirable: experience supervising and developing junior staff.
- Desirable: experience leading junior staff.
- Desirable: experience driving change, new initiatives, or service development.
