Student Data Analyst Internship

Overview

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is offering a student-focused, unpaid internship in Denver for work supporting a public health analytics project. The role is part-time, based on a hybrid schedule, and intended for Colorado residents only. It is a non-employee internship with no benefits and is not covered under the State of Colorado and COWins Partnership Agreement.

About the Program

This internship is housed within the Environmental Health and Sustainability Division and the Colorado Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The program builds surveillance capacity to help prevent, and eventually eliminate, childhood lead poisoning in Colorado. Its work includes laboratory test reporting, data management, system improvements, stakeholder partnerships, analysis of high-risk populations and geographies, targeted outreach, and in-home environmental investigations. The data and services support local public health agencies, families, caregivers, providers, and other department programs.

Project Work

The selected student will contribute to an internal dashboard project as part of a capstone-style analytics assignment. The work involves cleaning and preparing organizational data in R and using Tableau to create interactive dashboards for internal stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Build an internal Tableau dashboard with interactive charts, filters, and summary metrics.
• Prepare documentation covering data sources, workflow steps, dashboard features, and maintenance guidance.
• Present or demonstrate the completed dashboard and highlight the main findings.

Schedule and Internship Details

This role is expected to begin in fall 2026, with a desired start window from 9/21/2026 to 12/4/2026. The internship is expected to run for at least 2.5 months and may continue longer. The student is expected to work 8 to 10 hours per week, with a minimum commitment of 8 hours weekly.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open only to current Colorado state residents. Applicants must also be current students or recent graduates from the past three years, specifically June 2023 through the present. Eligible candidates include currently enrolled bachelor’s or master’s students in epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, public health, or a related field, as well as recent bachelor’s or master’s graduates in those same areas.

Qualifications

Applicants who qualify through education must provide transcripts or a foreign credential evaluation if applicable. A completed degree from an accredited college or university is required for recent graduates, and transcripts must show the school name and degree conferral. International credentials must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency through a NACES-approved service.

Preferred Background

Strong candidates will have experience interpreting and summarizing data, creating visualizations, using R at an intermediate level, working with Tableau or similar visualization tools, and demonstrating solid communication and organizational abilities.

Conditions of Employment

• A pre-employment background check is required.
• A signed non-employee confidentiality agreement must be completed.
• If the internship is used for academic credit, a signed affiliation agreement between CDPHE and the university is required.
• The role may offer hybrid work flexibility, but reporting to the listed office location may still be required depending on supervisor direction and business needs.
