Role Overview

This position is based in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with Reliance Industries Limited. The Chemist will support day-to-day laboratory operations, ensure accurate testing and reporting, and help maintain quality, safety, and compliance across sample analysis and related lab activities.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist the shift in-charge with shift coordination and laboratory workflow.
  • Sort and prioritize samples for analysis based on urgency and process needs.
  • Arrange suitable sample containers, identify the correct carriers for movement, and assign proper pre-testing storage locations.
  • Check chemical and standard solution usability before testing, carry out tests step by step as per procedure, and verify results through validation methods before sharing them.
  • Carry out calibration activities by identifying required calibrations and instruments according to the method schedule.
  • Prepare calibration solutions and working standards as needed.
  • Perform instrument and method calibrations on schedule and standardize laboratory solutions.
  • Assess the performance of additives and process chemicals.
  • Collect raw material samples as required and monitor incoming raw material quality.
  • Complete timely testing and reporting for raw materials, in-process samples, finished products, and troubleshooting samples across all plants.
  • Assign product grades according to specification requirements.
  • Spot unusual findings, exceptions, or deviations in test outcomes.
  • Take immediate corrective action in emergencies under the guidance of the section head.
  • Maintain proper sample retention as per laboratory procedures for customer-related issue handling when required.
  • Dispose of leftover samples safely according to SOPs and coordinate with plant teams and other agencies for further action.
  • Work with laboratory quality system requirements and use LIMS and SAP QM effectively for routine laboratory tasks.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory such as reagents, glassware, and equipment, and raise requirements in time to avoid shortages.
  • Take part in laboratory quality system audits, including safety audits.
  • Manage data accurately and ensure quality system compliance.
  • Ensure test results are entered and approved in LIMS on time.
  • Follow environmental, site, and statutory regulations.
  • Handle chemicals and tools safely and in line with safety norms.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and safe working conditions in the laboratory.
  • Follow and enforce applicable HSE procedures and practices.
  • Train analysts and new joiners on laboratory analytical work as part of on-the-job learning and mentoring.
  • Participate in external trainings and events as directed by the section head.
  • Complete assigned tasks on time, including situations where plans change quickly.
  • Work effectively with multiple stakeholders such as business teams, customers, operations, E&M, and HSEF.
  • Handle sample management and prioritize assigned activities effectively.

Technical and Functional Competencies

  • Ability to assess the reliability of results using statistical methods.
  • Understanding of test procedures and result reporting as per standard method requirements.
  • Knowledge of raw material, in-process, and finished product specifications, including analysis against contractual and domestic requirements.
  • Capability to operate specialized equipment, perform tests and calibrations, and interpret results.
  • Understanding of the importance of test parameters and laboratory safety.

HSE and Regulatory Requirements

  • Awareness of environmental, site, and statutory compliance requirements.
