ADInstruments develops software and hardware tools that help life science researchers and educators work more effectively. The company has a global customer base, with a team of about 60 people in Dunedin and nearly 180 employees worldwide.

Your role

This position is focused on providing technical leadership and architectural guidance for the Education product line, with particular emphasis on cloud backend design, system reliability, and security. You will shape the architecture of backend services, APIs, and databases, and advise on how cloud products should connect with desktop applications.

The team and working environment

You will collaborate closely with the Education Development Manager, the Chief Technology Officer, and the Platform Development Team. The engineering culture is collaborative, inclusive, and centered on sharing knowledge. The team values diversity, supports learning from one another, and takes a flexible approach to the workday. In this role, you will also help mentor engineers in system design, performance, and technical decision-making to encourage continuous improvement.

Skills and experience

This opportunity is suited to an experienced professional who can influence long-term architecture direction. The company is looking for someone who brings strong technical depth, good judgment, and the ability to support distributed software teams.

• A degree in Computer Science or a similar discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least 8 years of relevant industry experience.
• Proven ability to design and support production web applications that are robust, scalable, maintainable, and secure.
• Strong understanding of APIs, service boundaries, and integration approaches.
• Advanced experience with Java and TypeScript.
• Practical knowledge of desktop-to-cloud workflows and synchronization methods for integrating desktop and web applications.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and mentoring skills, with experience building alignment across teams.
• Background in security, privacy, compliance, or regulated environments, with a strong commitment to confidentiality.

Desirable experience

• Hands-on experience with AWS.
• Experience with Spring and SQL database design.
