About the role

Datacom is looking for an Application Engineer to join its Local Government Product Engineering team. In this position, you will help design, configure, test, and support solutions that power the Datascape ERP product.

You’ll be part of a collaborative team that takes pride in building high-quality products that create real value for the communities served by customers.

The work is hands-on and technical, with a strong emphasis on solution design and product thinking. You’ll translate business needs into dependable, well-structured outcomes using internal tools and platform capabilities.

This opportunity is open to candidates from different professional backgrounds, including software engineering, business analysis, or enterprise-system subject matter roles. The key requirement is a solution-oriented mindset, a commitment to quality, and the ability to work across both business and technical areas.

Datacom is also interested in people who are enthusiastic about the future of software engineering, including AI-assisted development, automation, and agentic ways of working. Deep prior experience is not essential, but a genuine interest in these approaches is important.

What you will do

• Design, configure, build, and maintain product changes that align with customer and business requirements.
• Test changes thoroughly so they are dependable and suitable for release.
• Assist with moving changes through environments, following approved release and change-control practices.
• Keep technical documentation current and share knowledge to support team learning and improvement.
• Contribute to better engineering practices, including automation, AI-assisted development, and agentic workflows.

What you will bring

• At least 2 years of experience in software engineering, solution delivery, business analysis, or a closely related technical or analytical field.
• Experience turning business requirements into system-level solutions within enterprise platforms or structured delivery environments.
• Comfort working with relational databases and the structures that support them.
• Working knowledge of Git and version control practices.
• Confidence using JSON, XML, SQL, or similar structured data formats and tools.
• Understanding of deployment workflows, change control, and multi-environment delivery.
• Strong analytical ability, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
• Ability to collaborate effectively within large cross-functional teams.
• Clear verbal and written communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Good time management and the ability to handle competing priorities.
• A strong sense of accountability and pride in delivering quality outcomes.
• Interest in modern engineering methods such as AI-assisted development, automation, and agentic working styles.
• A bachelor’s degree in IT, Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Background in ERP platforms or related enterprise business systems.
• Exposure to the local government sector, including its business processes, regulatory environment, or service delivery context.
• Experience in SaaS, managed services, or shared services settings.
• Familiarity with agile delivery methods such as Scrum or Kanban.
